St Benedict’s Catholic School opened in January 2018 with 163 students in 7 classes from Prep to Year 6. We welcomed three Prep classes, one Year 1 class, one Year 2 class, one Year 3 class and one multi-age 4/5/6 class. Over coming years we expect to grow to a school community of 700 students in 28 classes (4 classes per year level). Stage One of building St Benedict’s Catholic School saw us open with 3 learning area blocks with 4 classrooms in each, an Administration Block and a Multi-purpose Hall that includes a tuckshop, multi-purpose learning area and storage. Two classrooms will be used as a temporary library until Stage 3 or 4 when a purpose built library will be included.
We are very proud that Jackson Semler, our building contractors were awarded the Master Builders trophy for an Educational Facility over $10 million and the Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Environmental Management award for Stage One of our school building. We are also very proud to have been awarded with a 5 Greenstar rating by Green Building Council of Australia
Stage 2 of our building Project is due to commence in 2019 with 2 more learning area blocks of 4 classrooms each, giving us enough space to grow our school to 400 students by 2021.
The need for a new primary school
The planning for St Benedict's Catholic School, Shaw, had been some years in the making, and commenced when the Townsville Catholic Education Office faced waiting lists for Prep places in the local Catholic primary schools close to Shaw.
The opening of St Clare's Catholic School, Burdell in 2011 helped to ease the demand for places, but Townsville's continued growth and our local community's respect for the quality of Catholic education on offer in the Diocese, meant a new location should be investigated.
Located at Dalrymple Road, Shaw, St Benedict’s Catholic School services the city’s growth area of Bohle Plains, Greater Ascot, Mount Louisa, Kalynda Chase and Kirwan. The new school has been flagged with the Queensland Schools Planning Commission as assisting to meet the needs of the growing northern corridor.
St Benedict's Catholic School has been masterplanned as a Kindergarten to Year 6 school offering a unique primary school experience. Secondary school places for St Benedict's Catholic School students will be provided at our existing secondary facilities in the city. When the demand for more secondary places increases, the Townsville Catholic Education Office will review the mix of secondary schooling places available in the Townsville area.
Children attending Catholic primary schools receive a priority enrolment at secondary school in one of our Diocesan Catholic Secondary Schools*.
