Wellbeing

A core component for successful Student Engagement is Wellbeing. Student resilience and wellbeing are essential for both academic and social development, and are optimised by safe, supportive and respectful learning environments. Schools share this responsibility with the whole community. At St Benedict's we draw on a range of resources to develop and nurture wellbeing in our community.

Contemplative Spirituality

Through following the teachings of St Benedict we come to a way of being with a contemplative spirituality at its heart.

At St Benedict’s, all classes participate in Christian Meditation or other similar contemplative practices at 2:00pm. This time for contemplation is not about entering another place, but rather about entering more fully into the ordinary and discovering the absolute wonder of it, the presence of God.

As well as these practices, a Contemplative Spirituality also lends itself to another way of being which goes against the high-paced nature of the modern world. It gives our students a way of moving at a natural pace and to really see ‘God in all of life’.

Zones of Regulation

A Framework to foster self regulation and emotional control

Zones of Regulation provides students with the language they need to name their feelings

The Red Zone is used to describe extremely heightened states of alertness and intense emotions. A person may be elated or experiencing anger, rage, explosive behaviour, devastation, or terror when in the Red Zone.

The Yellow Zone is also used to describe a heightened state of alertness and elevated emotions, however one has more control when they are in the Yellow Zone. A person may be experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, the wiggles, or nervousness when in the Yellow Zone.

The Green Zone is used to describe a calm state of alertness. A person may be described as happy, focused, content, or ready to learn when in the Green Zone. This is the zone where optimal learning occurs.

The Blue Zone is used to describe low states of alertness and down feelings such as when one feels sad, tired, sick, or bored.

To assist students to manage their needs when in each of these zones, access is provided to a range of sensory tools. These tools are designed to be used for short bursts to meet the emotional and behavioural needs of students so they can move back into the optimal learning zone - Green.

Circle Solutions

A responsive program that offers an age appropriate model based on positive psychology to explore the development of healthy and respectful relationships. The program is able to be used in classrooms by trained teachers and support staff to address concerns as they arise and promote open and engaged conversations. This approach allows for tailored support and intervention to support overall wellbeing.

Support Programs

Secret Agent Society

A specialised social skills program, Secret Agent Society aims to build the knowledge and skills to interact appropriately with peers. The research based program was developed over 10 years ago and is delivered by specially trained staff in small groups, in particular for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. The program is supported through an at home completion of an online social skills game, in which participants complete secret missions using their secret agent gadgets (social and emotional regulation skills). The sessions take place across a series of weekly sessions.

Girl Power

Aimed at girls aged 5 - 12 years, Girl Power uses positive psychology to build and develop a positive mindset, inner confidence and resilience. Delivered as workshops, the sessions enable the development of positive friendships, social skills, self reflection and fun.
